Cast Iron Gutters - Combining Classic Styling With Modern Technology
Cast iron gutters have long been used to provide a hardwearing and effective rain water system, dating back to well before Victorian times, and it’s not difficult to see why. Aesthetically pleasing and normally painted black, cast iron gutters seem to frame a property and give it a more sturdy and established appearance. Indeed cast iron as a material has been around for centuries and has been used to develop everything from Kettles to Cannons, which is a testament to its hard wearing and malleable nature. However many properties still use the original Victorian cast iron guttering which is approaching greater ages and levels of ill repair caused through long exposure to the elements and in some cases prolonged neglect. This situation is prompting homeowners to ask “what should we do when the original cast iron gutters need replacing?”
The thought of replacing the existing cast iron guttering can be difficult as many homeowners are proud of the strong looks and period feel that it helps a property to retain. Many uninformed building contractors direct property owners in the direction of alternatives, such as the wealth of plastic rainwater solutions on the market. But many of these rainwater systems miss the mark in terms of style and the cheaper systems are prone to wear and tear, especially with the UK’s constantly changing weather conditions. Another common misconception is that cast iron gutters are only available in black and that it will look strange in contrast with their existing systems that might be deep olive greens or reds.
The good news is that replacement cast iron gutters are available and that come in a variety of styles to replicate the original look and feel of the original guttering. The new cast iron gutters come in a grey protective primer coat ready for painting, so the same colour choice can be chosen, although they can be pre painted to save you the job. An additional benefit to modern cast iron gutters is that they utilise modern jointing technology which has come on a great deal since the Victorians times. Modern gutter jointing reduces any cracks or gaps where water can seep though. Water left seeping through guttering can in time lead to undesired issues such as damp.
