Copper Gutters - Hard Wearing, Stylish and Effective
For many homeowners guttering is simply something that’s required to carry rainwater and defrosting snow and ice away safely and without adverse effects to the building. Many newly built homes are in fact built with tight budgets in mind and as a result are finished off with low quality plastic guttering that for a time will however provide a level of water dispersal. If you were to look at some homes or buildings that have more considered architecture though you might notice that the gutters and rain water systems themselves are woven into the designs fabric. Instead of being a mere rainwater system, they have been chosen for a specific reason and that is they enhance the building’s overall aesthetic. In fact many buildings throughout history have used rainwater systems to do this. If you were to look at buildings built hundreds of years ago you’d notice that castles and cathedrals often used gargoyles, their open mouths forming decorative spouts that eject the water away from the stone work and walls. Continuing to move forward through history highlights other period styled buildings. The Victorians used strong cast iron gutters and down pipes, topped with decorative hoppers and painted in a striking blacks and greens, which gave the building a grand, solid feel. With this wealth of inspiration founded in the past, it perhaps prompts the question, what other guttering material options are available for modern design enhancements?
A requirement of any rainwater system is that it has to be durable. It has to be able to withstand the magnitude of weather conditions our climate has to offer and be as effective in the colder months as the summer. In addition to this they should ideally look attractive and stylish, either blending in or standing out depending on the homeowner’s preference. Additionally one other important factor is that they should not require constant maintenance. Considered by many as one of the more attractive metals and renowned for its unique colour, copper gutters are becoming an increasing choice for homeowners wanting to add a stylish and different looking rainwater solution. While black guttering is ideal for some, copper gutters look just as striking and modern against roof lines, and the down pipes perfectly frame modern and traditional stone, wooden and brick properties. Much like many classic and traditional properties that use cast iron, copper gutters look and feel solid due to their bare metal aesthetic, making them at home on period properties. Copper also naturally oxidises when left bare to the elements and this process protects the metal surface. This oxidisation not only dulls the metal and transforms the looks; it also means that the gutters will be fine for many years and without undue amounts of maintenance.
