How To Paint Cast Iron Gutters

Cast iron gutters are great for giving a building a traditional look whilst providing all the essential benefits that a rainwater system should. They do not need a lot of maintenance, but if they are cared for regularly and properly you’ll get excellent value for money and gutters that can last for years and years.

So how often do cast iron gutters need painting? The life expectancy of cast iron gutters is around 40+ years depending on maintenance, and the better you treat it the longer it will last. Apart from the annual clearing out of leaves, a fresh coat of paint is required every 10 years or so, but it is a good idea to regularly check your gutters for visible signs such as plant or algae growth, corrosion (do check the rear of the pipes!), leaks from joints etc. When you’re doing your annual clear out of the gutters do make sure you look out for these signs as you go along. And remember, prevention is always better than cure.

When you do decide it’s time to paint your cast iron gutters it is probably best to take them down altogether. This usually means you need to replace the bolts, but that is a small price to pay compared to the value of gutters in good condition. It will also make it easier to reach all areas of the pipes and get to all the joints, and there is no need for the dreaded ladder to come out.

You must remember to never paint over rust. Go over the surface with a wire brush or coarse sandpaper to remove rust and loose paint, and ensure the surface is clean and grease free before you begin to paint. Aim to ask your manufacturer regarding the best paint to use, and if that is not possible seek professional advice elsewhere. You’ll probably find that at least one undercoat is necessary, and 1-2 top coats of should be sufficient and last for a good few years.

Don’t forget to top up the oil putty in the joints as this will stop any existing leaks and prevent future leaks that often arise when old putty dries out. Reassemble your cast iron gutters and you’ll find they’ll be as good as new.
