How To Replace Roof Guttering

How To Replace Roof Guttering

Knowing how to replace roof guttering is an essential skill for homeowners.

Over time, old guttering can crack, sag, or become clogged with debris, leading to water damage on the roof, fascia board, and even the walls of your house.

A proper gutter replacement ensures rainwater is directed safely to the drain, protecting your property and maintaining its quality.

At Yeoman Rainguard, we are experts in fitting made-to-measure guttering for numerous places where the guttering needs to be replaced.

Tools and Equipment You’ll Need

Before replacing or installing new gutters, gather the right tools. The easiest way to complete the process is to have everything to hand:

  • Ladder or scaffolding (for safety)
  • Spirit level and measuring tape
  • Drill, screws, wall plugs, and bolts
  • Hacksaw for cutting lengths of gutter
  • Clips, brackets, and downpipe clip
  • Socket and screws for securing fittings
  • Safety gear for working at height

Always review your installation plan first, taking into account the intended line and ensuring the vertical line of the downpipes will be in the correct position.

Removing Old Guttering

Before the installation of guttering, it is important to remove old guttering.

Start by safely climbing your ladder or setting up scaffolding. Loosen and pull away the old guttering from the fascia board, removing the clips and brackets. Take care when handling each length, lowering them to the ground to prevent damage or injury. Dispose of any waste responsibly, and clear away leaves, moss, or debris left behind.

By following the necessary steps when you tear down the old guttering, it will make your life much easier when you install the new gutter, and attach or replace any pipes, brackets, and fittings etc.

Preparing for Installation

To ensure the installation goes to plan, follow the following steps:

  1. Mark out fixing holes along the fascia where the new brackets will go.
  2. Drill the holes and insert wall plugs to provide strength.
  3. Make sure the line of the first length allows water to flow towards the running outlet. Using a spirit level, allow for a slight fall so water runs off efficiently.
  4. The spacing of brackets should be about 1 metre apart, with extra support in the middle and near joints.

Installing the Gutters

Here’s how to install the gutters:

  1. Begin at the opposite end of the outlet and hang the first length of gutter.
  2. Slide the back clip into place and secure it with screws.
  3. Add further lengths, ensuring joints line up correctly. Always leave room for expansion to avoid damage in hot weather.
  4. Use offset bends to connect the running outlet to the downpipe, and tie fittings together with clips.
  5. Continue installing until the full gutter replacement is in place.

Adding the Downpipes

Finally, you need to add the downpipes:

  1. Position the downpipe directly below the running outlet, ensuring a straight vertical line down the wall.
  2. Fix downpipe clips at regular spacing to hold it securely.
  3. If needed, use offset bends to align with the drain.
  4. Check that the pipe fittings are tight and secure with screws or bolts.

Final Checks and Maintenance

Before you are ready to use the guttering, it is important to test the gutters to ensure you have installed them correctly.

  • Run water from a tap or hose into the gutter to confirm the installation works correctly.
  • Ensure there are no leaks at joints or fittings.
  • Wipe away any waste, and check the fascia board and wall for marks or damage.

A properly installed system will give your house years of protection. Regularly review your gutters to clear debris and keep water flowing freely.
